Vishy Anand Chess Club is the New Club Champions of Sri Lanka
Vishy Anand Chess Club led by Nuwanka Jayawardena as the non playing captain, won the 2001/2 Inter Clubs Chess Championship which was concluded recently at CFSL headquaters in Colombo.

The winning team comprised of Derrick Perera on board 1, Nuwan Didula on 2, Thiwanka Mallawarachchi on 3, Dimuthu Priyadharshana on 4, Uddama Amarawickrama on 5, TDR Peiris on 6 and Shamin De Moraes on 7. Didula and Mallawarachchi won their respective board prizes with Didula recording the best performance in the finals by scoring 6.5/7.0.

The Champion team did not have it easy as the Champions of 1999-Modern CC and 2000-Nf3 CC gave them a good fight as VACC could manage only 3-3 and 3.5-2.5 respectively against these two clubs. The suprise of the event was when VACC lost to lowly rated Royal College Chess team by 2-4. VACC scored 4-2 against their nearest rival paul Morphy in a reversal of their performance against them in the qualifying. In the qualifying they lost to them by 2.5-3.5. VACC's other victories came against Kandy CC (5.5-0.5), Cherub CC (4-2) and a thrashing 6-0 over Nf3 'B' in the 6th round that setup the platform for victory.

The champion Vishy Anand team is due to tour Germany in October 2002 for a series of friendly matches against Bavarian Club teams.
